 Beginner Technique 

Right Hand: Hold the pick between your hooked index finger and your thumb going across the pick which should look similar to this:

Place the pick on top of a string and pick downward without hitting the string below. This can also be done with your thumb. 

Left Hand: Place your fingertip on the string making sure to keep the finger curved. Be as close to the fret wire as you can without touching it. If it doesn't sound clear, it is usually because of these things:

1) Fingertip should be on string with firm pressure applied

2) Finger should be curved

3) Fingertip should be close to fret wire (see photo)

sometimes when playing chords, we have to move fingers to the middle of the fret to make room for other fingers on the same fret.
